What Makes a Traditional Welsh Blanket Different?

A traditional Welsh blanket is more than a warm piece of woollen cloth. The pattern, construction, colour, weaving tradition and history all form part of its identity.

The importance of the pattern

Welsh blanket patterns developed distinctive geometric languages. Designs such as Caernarfon and Penmachno are recognised for their structured repeats and, traditionally, their double-cloth construction.

What is double-cloth weaving?

Double-cloth weaving creates two layers of cloth together within the same woven structure. In many traditional Welsh blankets this produces a reversible design, with the colours appearing in contrasting ways on opposite sides.

The result is not simply decorative. It is part of the character and construction of the blanket, giving the cloth substance, warmth and a particularly distinctive appearance.

Wool matters

Wool is naturally warm, breathable and insulating. It is also durable, which is one reason wool blankets have traditionally been kept and passed from one generation to another.

At Dinefwr Blankets, our patterns and contemporary colourways are developed in Wales. We work with skilled textile specialists in Britain to weave our cloth, and we finish our products in our workshop in Llandeilo.

Our long-term ambition is to weave again in Wales. We have already acquired vintage Dobcross looms and hope that, in time, they will once again produce cloth here.
