The History of the Welsh Blanket: Patterns, Wool and a Living Heritage

Welsh blankets are more than beautiful woollen textiles. They carry the stories of Welsh families, communities, sheep, mills and generations of textile knowledge. At Dinefwr Blankets, our mission is to help preserve that heritage by keeping traditional Welsh blanket patterns and their stories alive.

What makes a Welsh blanket special?

Traditional Welsh blankets are closely associated with the woollen textile industry that developed across Wales. Wool was spun, dyed and woven into cloth that was practical, durable and beautiful. Distinctive checks, stripes, double-cloth constructions and geometric motifs became part of the visual language of Welsh textiles.

The patterns themselves are an important part of the heritage. Names such as Caernarfon and Penmachno connect today’s collections with historic Welsh textile traditions, while the Dinefwr and Pennsylvania patterns tell further stories about how Welsh textile design has travelled and evolved.

The patterns we are preserving

At Dinefwr Blankets, we are particularly interested in preserving traditional Welsh blanket patterns rather than treating them simply as decoration. Our collections include heritage-inspired interpretations of patterns such as Caernarfon, Penmachno, Swansea Stripe, Dinefwr and Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania pattern is especially interesting because it reflects the wider story of Welsh migration and the relationship between Welsh communities and textile traditions beyond Wales. It is a reminder that Welsh textile heritage travelled with people and became part of new communities while retaining a connection to its origins.

British wool and the future of the tradition

Our Heritage Collection uses 100% British wool, with natural undyed colourways where specified. We work with trusted textile partners in the UK for the specialist processes involved in producing our blankets, including spinning, dyeing, weaving and finishing.

It is important to us that the story is told honestly: our current blankets are not woven in Wales. Dinefwr Blankets is a Welsh business based in Llandeilo, and our ambition is to bring weaving back in-house in Wales in the future. We have already acquired and restored four vintage Dobcross looms as part of that long-term vision.

Textile heritage can disappear surprisingly easily. Once a pattern stops being woven, its name, structure and story can become disconnected from the people who created and used it. By researching patterns, documenting their stories and creating new textiles inspired by historic designs, we can help keep that knowledge visible and relevant.

Dinefwr Blankets is a modern custodian of traditional Welsh blanket patterns. We want people to understand not only how a blanket looks, but why the pattern matters, where the tradition comes from and how Welsh textile heritage can continue into the future.
