IMPORTANT – DOG COAT HEALTH & SAFETY
Our Welsh wool dog coats are designed to provide warmth and comfort in cold weather. However, a dog coat is an item of clothing and should always be used responsibly and under supervision.
Please read the following before use:
- Supervision: Never leave your dog unattended while wearing the coat. Remove the coat if your dog becomes distressed, uncomfortable, excessively warm or attempts to chew it.
- Correct fit: The coat must fit comfortably and allow your dog to walk, run, sit, lie down, toilet and move normally. It should never be tight around the neck, chest or body, and should not restrict breathing or movement.
- Check regularly: Check the coat and your dog regularly while it is being worn. Look for rubbing, chafing, redness, irritation, matting or any other signs of discomfort.
- Overheating: Wool is naturally insulating and can retain warmth. Do not use the coat in warm weather, indoors for prolonged periods, during strenuous exercise or where your dog may become overheated. Dogs can develop heatstroke if they become too hot. Signs can include excessive or heavy panting, drooling, weakness, lethargy, difficulty breathing, vomiting, confusion or collapse. If you suspect your dog is overheating, remove the coat immediately, stop exercise, move your dog to a cool/shaded area and contact a vet if symptoms are severe or do not improve.
- Individual needs: Puppies, elderly dogs, dogs with thick or heavy coats, flat-faced breeds and dogs with respiratory, heart or other health conditions may be more vulnerable to temperature changes. If you are unsure whether your dog should wear a coat, consult your vet.
- Snagging and entanglement: Keep your dog away from fences, gates, branches, machinery and other objects where the coat could become caught or snagged. Do not allow your dog to wear the coat while crated or in situations where it could become trapped.
- Chewing: This coat is not a toy. If your dog chews or pulls at the coat, remove it immediately. Pieces of fabric, wool, fastenings or other components could present a choking or swallowing hazard.
- Lead and harness use: Always ensure that your lead, collar or harness can be used safely with the coat and that nothing is pulling against or obstructing the coat.
- Wet weather: If the coat becomes thoroughly wet, remove it when appropriate and dry both the coat and your dog. A damp coat can cause discomfort and may contribute to skin irritation.
- Sleeping: Do not leave your dog wearing the coat while sleeping or for extended periods when you cannot monitor them.
- After use: Allow your dog’s coat and skin to dry fully and check underneath the coat for moisture, irritation, rubbing or trapped debris.
Your dog’s welfare comes first. If your dog shows any sign that they do not like wearing the coat or appears uncomfortable, remove it immediately.
This product is intended as a supplementary layer of warmth, protection and fashion and is not a substitute for appropriate shelter, supervision, veterinary care or responsible dog ownership.
Important: Every dog is different. Dinefwr Blankets cannot determine whether a particular dog is suitable for wearing a coat. The owner or handler is responsible for assessing the dog, ensuring the coat is correctly fitted and supervising its use.
